1.74 Million: The Specific Metric Behind Tesla's Software Growth

Tesla’s reported subscriber count relies on a definition that includes upfront purchasers, a standard designed to align with executive compensation goals.

Tesla has announced that its active Full Self-Driving subscriber base has reached 1.74 million, a figure that represents a 67 percent increase over the previous year.

This milestone is detailed in the company’s Q3 2026 shareholder letter, which clarifies that the count follows the criteria set for the 2025 CEO Performance Award. Under this specific definition, the total includes both customers who pay monthly and those who purchased the software as a one-time upfront fee. Tesla ceased selling the software as a one-time purchase on February 14, 2026. Since that date, new customers in the US have only been able to access the feature via a $99 monthly subscription. However, owners who paid upfront before that deadline, at prices that reached up to $15,000, remain included in the active count as long as their vehicles are in operation. The only exclusion from this total is free trials. In April, when the count stood at 1.28 million, analysts noted that Tesla had not specified how many of those users were actually paying monthly. Six months later, the company has still not provided that breakdown for the current 1.74 million figure.

The choice of metric is significant because 10 million active subscriptions is one of the key milestones required for Elon Musk to earn his 2025 compensation package. This pay structure consists of 12 tranches, each requiring both a market capitalization target and an operational achievement. Other operational goals in the package include delivering 20 million vehicles, deploying 1 million Optimus robots, and placing 1 million robotaxis into commercial operation. As of June 30, Tesla considered only the 20 million delivery milestone to be probable. The letter also notes that the cumulative delivery figure of 10.2 million includes unsupervised robotaxis placed into commercial operation, a method used to align with the broader pay package targets. Additionally, Tesla reported that more than 75 percent of new deliveries in North America in Q3 included FSD subscriptions. This represents a nearly twenty percentage point sequential increase, and the company believes the software is driving demand in available markets. While the active subscription metric excludes free trials, the letter does not clarify if the attach rate does the same or how many introductory offer buyers continue paying after the initial period.

Reactions to the report have focused on the alignment between the reporting standard and executive incentives. One prominent comment by user PurpleCupcake argued that the specific metrics in the compensation plan may become less relevant if a change of control occurs, such as a potential acquisition by SpaceX, which could vest all metrics and count them as achieved. The commenter further noted the discrepancy of counting customers who were sold unsupervised self-driving as current subscribers to a supervised service with no defined end date for supervision. Critics point out that the board wrote the definition, Musk’s compensation depends on it, and the company has not disclosed how many users are currently paying the monthly fee.

Looking ahead, Tesla added 260,000 net FSD subscriptions in the third quarter, its best performance to date. If the company maintains this quarterly pace, it would take approximately eight years to reach the 10 million target. However, based on the average growth rate of the last 12 months, which was about 700,000 per year, the timeline could extend closer to 12 years. The compensation award remains active until 2035. Investors are now watching to see if the high attach rate translates into long-term retention. If the 75 percent take rate holds, it would represent a substantial revenue stream for the $99 monthly product. The next steps for Tesla will involve clarifying retention data and continuing to expand its active user base to bridge the gap between its current count and the ambitious milestones set in its executive compensation agreements.
