The first foldable iPhone is finally in customers' hands, marking a significant shift in the company's hardware lineup. Apple officially launched the iPhone Duo on Friday, October 23, with events taking place simultaneously at retail locations around the globe. The release represents a major technological step for the brand, moving beyond its traditional slab design into a new form factor that has generated considerable anticipation among consumers and tech enthusiasts alike.
A primary challenge for today's shoppers is the availability of the device. Apple had previously cautioned that retail inventory would be limited, a warning that appears to have materialized quickly. Long lines formed overnight at stores worldwide as early adopters sought to secure a unit without a pre-order. Despite the enthusiasm, many walk-in customers have found themselves unable to purchase a device immediately due to these stock constraints.
To manage the demand, store employees are advising disappointed shoppers to monitor the Apple Store app for updates. Specifically, in-store inventory details are expected to become visible in the application at 10 a.m. Eastern Time tomorrow. This approach allows the company to track real-time stock levels and provide customers with a clearer picture of what is available at their nearest location, rather than relying solely on physical visits.
Company executives were present at key locations to celebrate the debut. Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, was seen at the flagship Fifth Avenue store in New York City alongside retail executive Vanessa Trigub. Meanwhile, CEO John Ternus was in Austin, Texas, at the Domain NORTHSIDE location with retail chief Deirdre O’Brien. Ternus’s presence in Texas also coincides with his recent tour of Apple’s Austin offices, a move that aligns with the city's growing tech footprint.
The timing of the Austin event is notable for additional reasons. The Formula 1 United States Grand Prix is scheduled for this weekend in the same city. Apple serves as the exclusive streamer for F1 in the United States, creating a unique convergence of the company's hardware launch and its media streaming business. This alignment highlights the company's strategy of integrating its various product lines and services within major cultural and sporting events.
For those who missed the initial wave of sales, the outlook remains focused on digital channels and subsequent restocks. While the physical stores are currently experiencing high traffic, the digital app will serve as the primary tool for checking availability in the coming days. The launch day atmosphere has been described as a worldwide party, with staff offering hands-on demos to help customers understand the new folding mechanism and features. As the first day concludes, the focus shifts to whether supply chains can keep pace with the immediate demand for this new category of smartphone.
