Mbappe Bets On Record-Breaking Goals To Secure Ballon d'Or
The Real Madrid star aims to overcome a trophy-less season by leveraging his historic World Cup scoring record and league-leading performance.

Kylian Mbappe is going against the grain at Monday's Ballon d'Or ceremony in London. He is not the bookmakers' favorite, nor did he dominate every scoring chart last season, yet he is aggressively pushing his case for the award. The prize carries no cash value, but it significantly boosts a player's market worth and global status. Mbappe is willing to bet his reputation on individual brilliance to break through a season where his team failed to lift a single major trophy.
The numbers backing his campaign are undeniable. At the 2026 World Cup in North America, Mbappe claimed the Golden Boot for the second consecutive tournament. He also became the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history with 22 goals in 22 matches. This record places him ahead of Lionel Messi, who has 21, and Miroslav Klose, who has 16. In club competition, the former PSG forward netted 25 goals to top the La Liga charts and added 15 in the Champions League, where he also led the scoring race.
Despite these statistical milestones, the lack of silverware remains a significant hurdle. Real Madrid endured a turbulent year under managers Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa. The team finished second in La Liga and were eliminated by Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals. This result extended Real's trophy drought to a second straight season. On the international stage, France also fell short, placing fourth at the World Cup after losses to Spain in the semifinals and England in the third-place playoff.
The competition is fierce. Lamine Yamal won the World Cup with Spain and the La Liga title with Barcelona. Harry Kane also had a strong showing, collecting three trophies for Bayern Munich, including the Bundesliga title. These rivals have concrete team achievements to point to, whereas Mbappe relies on his individual output. He remains confident in his approach, telling radio station RFI that the award goes to a player, not a team. He believes his ability to create eye-catching moments is what matters most for this specific honor.
Support for his bid is not limited to himself. Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has publicly backed the forward. Mourinho stated that the world knows who made history this summer and noted that the player in question is not from PSG or the Spanish national team. This endorsement adds weight to Mbappe's argument that his individual impact outweighs the collective struggles of his clubs.
Historically, the odds are not in his favor. Over the past decade, every Ballon d'Or winner has lifted at least one major trophy in the award year. The 2025 winner, Ousmane Dembele, helped PSG win their first Champions League title. Rodri, the previous winner, took Euro 2024 with Spain and the Premier League with Manchester City. The last player to win without a major trophy was Cristiano Ronaldo in 2013. Ronaldo ended Messi's four-year streak with 66 goals for club and country, despite Portugal failing to qualify for the 2012 World Cup and Real Madrid finishing as league runners-up.
This precedent suggests a slim but possible path for Mbappe. He has been nominated nine times and finished third in 2023. For many observers, his moment is long overdue. If the voters prioritize his historic scoring records over team success, he could finally claim the gold ball.
