Federal agents arrested a 17-year-old resident of McKinney on October 5, ending a period of heightened security for Representative Keith Self. The lawmaker, who is currently seeking a third term in the U.S. House, confirmed that his team learned of the detention the following day through U.S. Capitol Police. Officials indicated that the teen was being monitored by federal investigators and believed to be radicalized.

The campaign stated that authorities believed the suspect was planning a terrorist attack in the name of ISIS. Specifically, the plan targeted the congressman during a chili cook-off fundraiser for veterans scheduled for October 17. That event was set to include former Dallas Cowboys players and several high-profile guests, making it a significant public appearance for the officeholder.

Self explained that his response was shaped by his background as a former soldier who has deployed to combat zones multiple times. He noted that while many politicians might panic upon learning of a specific assassination attempt, his military experience allowed him to remain steady. He focused on determining if the suspect was acting alone or part of a larger group, while acknowledging the seriousness of the federal intervention.

The congressman’s wife, who has spent 25 years as a military spouse, also took the news seriously. Self noted that she understood the potential risks involved in public service, having seen him depart for dangerous assignments in the past. This shared history helped the family navigate the immediate aftermath of the arrest with a sense of familiarity regarding the threat.

This incident stands out from previous threats Self has received because it resulted in an actual arrest. The congressman acknowledged that while he has faced threats before, none had escalated to the level of federal detention. He understood that the plot could have led to a very serious incident based on the information provided by investigators.

Despite the looming threat, Self attended the chili cook-off as planned. He judged 19 different varieties of chili and three pots of beans during the event. He described the experience as delightful and reported that nothing went wrong during the gathering, allowing the fundraiser to proceed without interruption.

The congressman has continued his campaign activities while maintaining a heightened sense of awareness. He has been out polling and greeting voters daily, including on the morning of the interview. He stated that the plot will not deter him from his goal of informing the American public about what he describes as a concerning political ideology.

The arrest coincides with Self’s recent legislative focus on Sharia law. In September, he introduced a nonbinding concurrent resolution denouncing Sharia law and opposing its implementation in the United States. The resolution asserts that the U.S. Constitution remains the supreme law of the land. His opponent, Evan Hunt, also condemned the alleged plot on social media.

The district also includes McKinney, where a new mosque expansion has been a point of local debate. In August, the city council approved a site plan for the expansion after hours of contentious public comment. The teen’s identity has not been released publicly as the federal investigation continues.
